Family Law

We represent clients who are facing separation and divorce and will help you to create a plan for your future and the future of your children. The past cannot be changed, but we aim to make the future brighter.  We help to resolve custody, visitation and relocation issues, and work through the financial issues including the division of assets/debts as well as child support and spousal support (alimony).

Our Family Law Frequently Asked Questions may help get you started.

Mediation

Mediation is a positive component to resolving many family law concerns. As a highly trained mediator having completed more than 200 mediations, attorney Steven Hirsch works with couples to develop options and create solutions to their concerns in a comfortable environment, saving funds and promoting a conciliatory family relationship, since parents will always be connected by their children and grandchildren.  Mediated solutions usually reduce the ongoing disputes that often arise after the divorce, since the parties were able to voice thier concerns, and express their thoughts during the mediation.  Because the Courts are busy, very few people get the opportunity to tell their side of the story and vent; mediation allows parties to do so, encouraging closure and allowing parties to move forward.

Steven was chosen to write, as a respected Mediator in RI, the Chapter entitled "Mediation and Other Dispute Resolution Alternatives" in a book published and offered for purchase to RI Lawyers and Professionals. The Book, entitled "A Practical Guide to Divorce in Rhode Island" was published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. of Boston Mass.

Workers' Compensation

Insurance companies are not looking out for an injured employee's best interests. Their goal is to pay an injured employee the minimum amount of benefits possible. We help employees secure the benefits to which they are entitled and establish the employer's liability for any future problems that may arise because of your injury.  Steve has been representing injured employees before the Workers' Compensation Court for over thirty years, so that each injured worker receives the weekly benefits, medical benefits and scarring benefits to which he or she is entitled.  And while Steve is doing that, the injured employee can focus on the medical recovery.

Personal Injury

Serious harm caused by the negligent conduct of another person could mean that you are entitled to fair compensation in a personal injury claim. We work with you to evaluate your case and strive to obtain the best possible financial recovery.

Estate Planning and Probate

By developing Wills and Trusts and establishing a power of attorney, we help you plan for your future and the future of your loved ones. We also make sure that you have chosen a medical agent to alert medical care givers of the medical decisions that you may not be able to express for yourself.  Visit our Estate Planning FAQ.  Although young families often do not believe a Last Will is necessary because they do not have a lot of assets, a Will is necessary to identify the Guardian to raise the children in the event of an untimely death.

Social Security Disability

If you have become totally disabled, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. When applying for benefits, it is common to be turned down. We will guide you through the appeals process, working to ensure you receive the benefits to which you are entitled.

Business Law

We can help you with business decisions ranging from the start-up process to representing your established company from breach of contract disputes to finance transactions. View our Business Law frequently asked questions.
