Attorney Steven Hirsch has more than three decades of experience as a lawyer and over 15 years as a mediator. We are prepared to spend the time it takes to effectively represent your needs in the following areas:
Family Law
As an experienced Rhode Island divorce attorney, Steven Hirsch effectively represents clients who are facing separation and divorce in Rhode Island. We will work with you to help you create a plan for your future and the future of your children. The past cannot be changed, but we aim to make your future brighter. We help resolve custody, visitation and relocation issues, and work through the financial issues including the division of assets/debts, real estate matters, child support and spousal support (alimony). We also help clients preserve their financial interests in the event that a need for child support modification should arise in the future. Our firm can also handle post-divorce changes or real estate obstacles that may affect your divorce.
Many couples decide to live together without the formality of becoming married. When they separate, the Family Court does not have jurisdiction over disputes regarding the assets and debts they have incurred during their time together. We now see separating unmarried couples when one person owns a house and the other has paid for improvements and a portion of the mortgage. We work with parties entering into non-married relationships and those already in non-married relationships to prepare a Cohabitation Agreement that sets forth what each person will contribute and what will occur if there is a later separation.

Divorce Mediation
Mediation is a collaborative process and is a positive component to resolving many family law concerns, such as divorce, child custody, and other matters. As a highly trained mediator having completed more than 200 mediations, Warwick divorce mediator Steven Hirsch works with couples to develop options and create solutions to their concerns in a comfortable environment, saving funds and promoting a conciliatory family relationship — a necessity given that parents will always be connected through their children and grandchildren. Additionally, because the parties are able to voice their concerns and express their thoughts during the mediation process, mediated solutions usually reduce the ongoing disputes that often arise after the divorce. Unfortunately, due to busy courtroom calendars and the speed at which many trials proceed, this is often not the case for people who proceed with divorce litigation. Mediation allows parties to say what they need — encouraging closure and allowing parties to move forward.
As a well-respected Rhode Island mediator, Steven Hirsch was selected to write the chapter entitled "Mediation and Other Dispute Resolution Alternatives" in a book for Rhode Island lawyers and professionals. The book, entitled "A Practical Guide to Divorce in Rhode Island," was published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts.
Elder Law Mediation
Steven Hirsch applies his experience as an attorney and mediator to resolving elder law disputes. When family members disagree about a loved one's need for nursing home care, assisted living care, or home health care, Steve works to bring the parties together in a respectful, open forum where they can discuss options, express concerns, and work together to achieve agreement on these delicate matters. He also works with clients to resolve related financial issues, such as how care expenses will be paid , what should be done with the home, how bills will continue to be paid, and other critical issues that arise. This approach enables families to resolve important decisions without the risk of a potential severance in family relationships.
Estate Planning and Probate
By developing wills and trusts and establishing a power of attorney, we help you plan for your future and the future of your loved ones. We also make sure that you have chosen a medical agent to alert medical caregivers of the medical decisions that you may not be able to express for yourself. Although young families often do not believe a Last Will and Testament is necessary because they do not have a lot of assets, a Will is necessary to identify the guardian to raise the children in the event of an untimely death.

Workers' Compensation
Insurance companies do not act for an injured employee's best interests. Their goal is to pay an injured worker the minimum amount of benefits possible. We help employees secure the benefits to which they are entitled and establish the employer's liability (through its workers' compensation insurance policy) for any future problems that may arise because of the employee's work injury. Steve has been representing injured employees before the Workers' Compensation Court for over 33 years. Our law firm is committed to helping injured workers recover the weekly benefits, medical benefits, and scarring benefits to which they are entitled. Our thorough representation enables injured workers to focus on the medical recovery, not on dealing with the intricacies of the workers' compensation system.
Personal Injury
Serious harm caused by the negligent conduct of another person could entitle you to fair compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages in a personal injury claim. We work with you to evaluate your case and strive to obtain the best possible financial recovery.

Social Security Disability
If you have become disabled — suffering a temporary or permanent total disability — you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. When applying for benefits, it is common to be denied. We will guide you through the Social Security Disability appeals process, working to ensure you receive the benefits to which you are entitled.
Business Law
We provide experienced advice to business owners and entrepreneurs. We can advise you regarding the business start-up process, financial transactions and commercial transactions, and can effectively represent you in breach of contract disputes and other business litigation.
