A divorce can be a very stressful time in an individual's life. Whether one is a working parent or a celebrity on the Biggest Loser, divorce brings a host of family law issues along with it. One of the most emotional issues divorcing parents may face are issues related to child custody.
Biggest Loser contestants Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson have announced that they will be getting a divorce after one year of marriage. Anderson also happens to be seven months pregnant with her husband's child. Residents of Rhode Island may face similar child custody issues when their divorce will happen before they even become parents. It is important that individuals facing child custody issues understand all possible scenarios and options. It is also imperative that the former spouses develop a sound parenting plan.
Depending on the circumstances of the split, it may be a good idea for the parents to work out between themselves a parenting schedule. However, there may be circumstances where emotions are high and feelings have been hurt. In these cases, a legal professional or mediator may be the best option to assist the parents with a parenting plan. However, if the parents cannot agree, the court will intervene.
When a court decides child custody issues, they will begin with what is in the best interests of the child. A judge can award physical custody to one parent or the other. This means the child will spend most of their time with this custodial parent. A judge will also determine if the parents should be awarded joint legal custody. This means that both parents will have an equal say in how the child is raised and important decisions that need to be made.
Divorce can be a stressful time, but it is important that Rhode Island residents know that there is help available. Child custody issues should be handled with extreme diligence and attention.
