Rhode Island residents may think they have very little in common with famous athletes, movie stars and musicians. The reality, however, is that celebrities face many of the same family law issues that the rest of us face. One of these issues is divorce.
In February 2013, Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach and his ex-wife, Stephanie Gonis announced their separation. The couple married in 2009 and has one daughter, Sadie, who is 4-years-old.
Auerbach recently finalized his divorce from Gonis. As part of the settlement, Gonis will receive $5 million, a Toyota SUV and one of the former couple's residences. Gonis will also receive a personal, sentimental item from the couple's marriage - a piece of Bob Dylan's hair.
As the above case exemplifies, property division in a divorce can take many forms. While not every couple will have multiple homes, cars or bank accounts to divide, there are other items that may have been acquired during a marriage that can have just as much value to the individual. And, as a result, oftentimes a single piece of property can cause major contention during the property division process.
However, even in a complicated divorce a couple can negotiate or mediate to reach a positive solution. One of the key issues when separating assets in a divorce is determining what property was acquired during the marriage and what property should be deemed to be the separate property of the spouse.
Not every divorce requires aggressive litigation. In some cases, negotiations and mediations may be the best approach.
