The glitz and glamour of Hollywood is far removed from the lives of many Rhode Island families, but many people do still enjoy watching movies and television shows that portray more exciting and lavish lifestyles. An actor on one popular television program was recently hit with an enormous financial surprise when his ex-wife sought to modify their child support agreement.
The ex-wife of "Two and a Half Men" star John Cryer and the mother of his 13-year-old son has requested an increase in child support that is nearly ten times what the actor previously paid. The mother has claimed that since the time the child is in her custody increased from 4 percent of the time to around 50 percent of the time, the amount of money he receives from his father should also reflect that modification.
With the previous child support payments amounting to around $8,000 per month, Cryer's ex-spouse now wants their son to receive nearly $90,000 per month in support. She claims that the increase is necessary in order to support the cost of living in an expensive location, as well as to ensure that their son is able to do everything that his rich friends can do, such as wear expensive clothing and take lavish vacations.
Generally, child support is necessary to make sure that the custodian of a minor child is able to manage the everyday expenses that the child requires. Factors such as prior lifestyle and incomes of the parents can also be factored in, though how the judge in this case will rule has not been publicly released.
As this actor faces an overwhelming demand from his ex-wife, individuals here in Rhode Island may be facing proportionally daunting child support payments and modifications of their own. Though courts often make their decisions based on what is in a child's best interests, individuals can prepare solid cases that demonstrate to judges just how reasonable child support arrangements will be for the responsible parties.
