Rhode Island residents would probably agree that while divorces are difficult to deal with, they can be especially hard on the children. Many times the best interests of the child are compromised amidst an acrimonious divorce proceeding between the estranged spouses.
Recently, the celebrity couple of Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy, who were entangled in an acrid divorce proceeding, finally reached an agreement regarding their child custody issues. The child custody agreement includes the provision that their four-year-old child will now be raised by both parents. The statement, made by Hoppy's attorney, claimed that the father was happy with the settlement reached. The other details of the divorce proceedings were, however, still unsettled and ongoing.
In most states in the nation like Rhode Island, the court places great importance on the best interests of the child when determining child custody issues. Often, it is the economic conditions of the parents that determine which one becomes the custodial parent.
There are many variations of child custody. Sole custody refers to a situation where only one of the parents is given primary and sole custody of the child. In this case, the other parent may be granted visitation rights, either supervised or unsupervised depending upon the case. Joint custody is more popular nowadays with both parents wanting to be actively involved in their child's life.
Custodial battles may be convoluted and drawn out, especially where both parties have a lot of ill-will towards the other. In such cases, going into the custodial battle alone would indeed be a daunting challenge. It might be in the best interests of the parents to consult with an experienced legal professional who could guide them towards a favorable custodial arrangement.
