Back-to-school tips for Rhode Island co-parents

Following a divorce, children's lives can be turned upside down. Rhode Island residents may try to do everything they can to keep their kids' lives the same, but there will be significant changes, even in the best of situations. With a new school year starting, many parents may be unsure how to make the most of their child custody situation to keep their kids happy.

Experts say that it is important for both parents to be on the same page when it comes to school related information and activities. Co-parents should not focus on fighting with each other, but should be on the same team for their children. In order to do this, experts say that parents should show up to school related activities even if it is not "their" week. This will help show the child that the parents are both engaged and interested in their lives.

Experts also say that parents need to appoint one parent to handle the school administration information and details. This doesn't mean that the other parent shouldn't be informed about what is happening, just that one parent is responsible for giving the school any information it needs.

Furthermore, in order to keep both parents informed, the school should have the contact information for both parents. And, both parents should have the login information for any online assignment, grade or attendance tracking programs. By scheduling progress meetings and sharing a school calendar, both parents can remain active participants in their child's school life.

Figuring out how to balance school can be difficult for co-parents. However, by working together parents can give their kids an easier transition following a divorce.
