Paying child support in Rhode Island via direct deposit

Parents in Rhode Island paying child support have many options to do so. One of these options that may be convenient for some is paying child support via direct deposit. Through direct deposit, the child support funds will be electronically tranasferred from the paying parent's bank account to the receiving parent's bank account.

Direct deposit is beneficial in many ways. For example, it can save time. No one needs to go to the bank, complete deposit slips or memorize bank account numbers. In addition, child support payments may be available to the receiving parent in as little as three days. Moreover, using direct deposit eliminates any chance that a check could be lost in the mail or could be stolen, making it a more secure way to pay child support. And perhaps one of the best features of direct deposit is that it is a free service.

To apply for direct deposit, the paying parent must fill out the "Authorization for Direct Deposit" form. A copy of a voided check must be included with the completed form. After that, the form and voided check will be mailed to the Rhode Island Office of Child Support Services.

Once the Office of Child Support Services receives the paying parent's form and voided check, their bank will be contacted to confirm that the information on the form is accurate. Then the paying parent's bank account will be set up with direct deposit. All in all, this process can take about 20 days. Until then, child support payments must continue to be paid by paper check.

Direct deposit can be a good way for Rhode Island parents to meet their financial obligations. It is secure and saves time, which can benefit both the paying parent and the receiving parent. This, in turn, can make it easier for the receiving parent to pay for the child's everyday expenses. Therefore, everyone -- each parent and the child -- benefits when child support payments are made in full and on time.
